If a Death Occurs

The West Prince Funeral Home should be notified immediately by the hospital, nursing home, other institution, clergy or family member.

Our phone number is (902) 882-2457 and is answered 24 hours a day.

After the funeral home has been notified of the death, a director will contact the next of kin or the person responsible, to set a time to make the necessary arrangements. This meeting normally takes place at the funeral home.

Personal information about the deceased will be needed as well as a set of clothing and a picture. The time and place of the visitation and funeral will be decided at this time. The clergy or celebrant must be contacted before times for the visitation and funeral can be set. At this time also, the notices  newspaper will be prepared.

The loss of a loved one is a very traumatic experience. Our funeral home staff are specially trained to travel through this difficult time with you, with compassion and understanding. We can help you regardless of the circumstances or place of death, even if it is outside of Prince Edward Island.

McKenna, James Alexander "Dale" September 21, 2025

The death occurred peacefully at the Tignish Long Term Care Facility, with loving family members present, on Sunday,September 21st, 2025, of James Alexander "Dale" McKenna, formally from the Dock Road,in Elmsdale West and more recently Alberton, aged 89 years. Loving husband of Eileen Rosemary McKenna(Reilly)

Devoted father to Jacinta (Larry) Arsenault, Ron (Angele), Leigh (Isabel), Neil (Sylvie) and Paul.
He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Ron, Joey, Anthony, Andrea, Dale, Alexander, Sarah, Gabrielle and Riley, also his numerous great-grandchildren.

Born on September 19, 1936, Dale was pre-deceased by his parents Ronald and Gertrude(Cameron) McKenna ,and his four sisters who he dearly loved, Joan McCluskey, Aileen(late Carl) Shea, Norma(late Basil) Griffin, and Catherine, who he so lovingly cared for over many years.

Dale is also survived by his brother-in-law Bernie McCluskey of Moncton NB,and three sisters-in-law; Rhoda McCarvell and Mae Wedge of Hamilton,Ontario, and Janet Reilly of Burton, PEI.

Also special mention to acknowledge the love and caring of his beloved nieces and nephews of the Norma/Basil Griffin family, and the Joan/Bernie McClusky family, as well as those nieces and nephews on the Reilly side of the family.

Visitation will be on Thursday September 25,2025 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Funeral will take place on Friday September 26,2025 at Sacred Heart Church, Alberton PEI at 10:30 am

Fr.Jacques Rigaud will be officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Gaudet, Mary "Diana" August 20, 2025

Diana Gaudet (Wedge) of St. Louis, PE, passed away peacefully in the company of loved ones on August 20, 2025 at Prince County Hospital, Summerside, PE.

Born in Miminegash, PE, Diana was the eldest child of Alyre and Freda Wedge (Butler). Diana was the loving wife of Robert Gaudet of St. Louis, PE, for 55 years. Mother of Stacy Lanois (Andre) of Brockville, ON and Jason Gaudet of Charlottetown, PE. Survived by siblings, Marie Perry (Leo), Patsy Shea (Francis), Shirley Boulet, Michael Wedge and Charles Wedge (Jay). Diana is also survived by her cherished Grand Children, Hannah Lanois and Nolan Lanois (Sydney). Also in mourning are in-laws, Charlie Gaudet (Gail), Elmer Gaudet (Laura), Dolores Gallant and Pauline Kingdon (Jim).

She will always be deeply missed by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, Alyre and Freda Wedge and brother David Wedge. Diana was also pre-deceased by Parent-in-Laws, Belonie and Mary Ann Gaudet (Arsenault), sister-in-law Leona Perry, brother-in-law John Gallant and brother-in-law Leo Gaudet.

Diana was a loving wife to Robert and mother to Stacy and Jason. She adored her grandchildren and was proud to see them grow up to be wonderful adults. She was a quiet woman who did not care for attention. She went about her business without expecting anything for what she did. Her whole life was service to others while working in a nursing home, serving as a member of the Kinettes, Tignish Legion, Miminegash Firemenettes, a Eucharist minister at the Palmer Road church as well as a board member of the West Prince Funeral Coop.

Diana was a devout Catholic who practised her faith without doubt. She found good in everyone and would never say anything about anyone. She was one of a kind, a peaceful, gentle soul with a kind smile for everyone. To her siblings, she was more than a “big sister”, she was their best friend.

Diana could be found regularly reading on her E-Reader, solving puzzles, and especially solving the daily Cryptoquote. She was a great cook and enjoyed watching various cooking shows and the Hallmark Movie Channel.

She was smiling as she drew her last breath. That smile will always be remembered by those who loved her. She was quiet; but, her sense of humour would always catch you off guard. Diana never complained and felt that “life was worth living with whatever you’ve been dealt”. Her whole life was to serve others, with her career at Wellington House Nursing Home and numerous volunteer opportunities.

Resting at the West Prince Funeral Home. Visitation Sunday August 24, 2025 7-9 pm. Funeral Mass Monday, August 25, 2025 10:30 am., at Palmer Road Catholic Church. Reception to follow at the Palmer Road Community Centre.



In lieu of flowers, the follow have requested donations be made to the Arthritis Society of Canada.

Keefe, Mary "Hilda" July 20, 2025

The death occurred peacefully surrounded by family, at the Tignish Seniors Long Term Care, Tignish on July 20 ,2025 of Mary "Hilda" Keefe, aged 90.

Hilda was the daughter of the late Wilbert and Irene (Harper) Keough and lived most of her life in Skinners Pond PEI, with her late husband Bennett Keefe.

Born on March 8th, 1935 in Christoper Cross, Hilda lived a life centered around family. She was a devoted mother and an extrodinary grandmother and great grandmother- known as Grammie and Great-Grammie- a title she wore with pride and joy.

Hilda leaves behind three of her five children; Brian (Bertie), Francine (James) and Helen Marie (Dean), along with her cherished grandchildren; Lindsay, Sean, Lisa, Sheldon, Adam, Leslie, Jordan, Bennett, Issac and Laura. She will be sadly missed by her great-grandchildren; Brody, Jessa, Weston, Emily, Cameron, Landon, Wyatt, Cora, Tara, Mason, Griffin, Cullen and Kieran. She is also survived by sister Clare, brother John, and son-in-law Brian.

Hilda was pre-deceased by her parents , Wilbert and Irene Keough,her husband Bennett her daughter Beverly,her daughter Pauline and sonin law Robert; as well as her parents-in-law Anthony and Freda Keefe. She was also pre-deceased by several brothers and sisters, Arnold, Ethel, Winston, Ray, Ralph, Karen and Rose Marie.

Hilda, was bright and quick witted, with a playful laugh. She cherished time with family and loved each of them deeply. While she was many things in her life- devoted daughter, loving mother, loyal friend- her most cherished roles were "Grammie" and "Great-Grammie", and she fulfilled these roles with unmatched love and devotion. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were truly the very heartbeat of her life.

She was also a lover of music and dance. Whether it was a classic tune playing on the radio or live local musicians, she was always the first to tap her toes, hum along and smile from ear to ear. If you really wanted to see her come alive, you'd see her on the dance floor.

Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, July 24th at 11:00 am , at Immaculate Conception Church, Palmer Rd. Interment in the church cemetery following the mass, with reception following the burial at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Palmer Rd

Shea, Michael Delbert July 9, 2025

The death occurred peacefully surrounded by family, at Prince County Hospital, Summerside, on Wednesday July 9, 2025, of Michael Delbert Shea of Ebbsfleet aged 60.

Michael was born on November 14,1964 to the late Clifford and Audrey(O'Brien) Shea of Ebbsfleet.

Left to mourn and lovingly remembered by his wife Sara and daughter Charlotte ,as well as daughters, Alyx and Chakyra.

Never to be forgotten by his sisters and brothers, Arlene(John), Ronnie(Mary), Austie(Audrey), Claude(Noella), Terry(Darlene), Karen(Jimmy), Glenda, Cindy(Timmy),and Pat(Sharon)and brother in law Cameron Leonard.

Michael will never be forgotten by numerous neices, nephews and cousins.

Always remembered by his in-laws Michael Ellis, Evelyn Lewis, Amanda, Nathan(Megan)and Parker(Marissa).

Michael was pre-deceased by his parents Clifford and Audrey Shea, sister Patsy, brothers Stephen, Joseph, Dennis and Howard in infancy, brother in law Robert and nephew Clifford as well as wife Kimberley.

Mike worked in the family business, Shea's Construction for many years. He gained his Red Seal in welding and worked on the contruction of the Confederation Bridge. In recent years he worked as an oyster fisher which he enjoyed immensly.
Mike had a great sense of humour and could always make you laugh. He had a big heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

There will be no public visitation by personal request. Attendance is by invitation only.

Funeral (for the public) will take place at Immaculate Conception Church, Palmer rd. on Tuesday July 15th, 2025 at 3:00pm with Fr. Praveen officiating, interment will take place following the mass at Immaculate Conception Cemetery.





There will be refreshments at the Knights of Columbus Hall after.

Gallant, Deborah Maria July 3, 2025

The death occurred on Thursday July 3, 2025, at the Palliative Care Unit, Community Hospital O'Leary surrounded by her loving family of Deborah (Debbie) Maria Gallant of Miminegash aged 67. Debbie was the daughter of the late Arnold and Evelyn(Chaisson) Gaudet.

Loving wife to Patrick(Pappy) Gallant and a loving mother to Trent(Gina), Cynthia(Gregory) and TJ(James)

She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Breeanna(Alex), Mackayla, Mya, Lily , Harlie, and Jase, also by great-grandchild Hadley.

She will be forever remembered by her brothers and sisters, Joanne(Wayne), Janice(Lennie), Donna(Chris), Dale(Faye), Rene(Michell), and Blair(Marcella)

Never to be forgotten by her in-laws, Billy(Sharon), Dot(Herbie), Judy, Gerard(Lavern), Darlene(Kendal), Raymond, Jimmy Earl(Beverly) and Dale(Irene)

Debbie was a beloved Aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.

Debbie was predeceased by her parents Arnold and Evelyn,and by brothers Alden and Randy. Also predeceased by her in-laws Freeman and Mary Gallant Emily(Adrien), and Gussy.

One of the services the funeral home offers is assisting families in pre-planning funerals. More and more people recognize that planning in advance lessens the burden on those you love. There is peace of mind in knowing that everything is in order.

There are different reasons for planning ahead. It lets you make arrangements according to your own wishes. If funeral services are paid for in advance they are guaranteed at today's prices. The total amount can be paid at once or by installments agreed to by you and the funeral home. Your money is held in trust and there is no risk of loss.

An annual meeting is held in March.
A third of the board is elected each year for a three year term.
A member may be elected for two consecutive terms.
The constitution requires the board to hold at least six meetings per year.


History

Our funeral co-op, formerly known as the Palmer Road Funeral Co-op, was the first in Atlantic Canada. Its inception sparked the flame for future funeral co-ops.

Supported by the Palmer Road Knights of Columbus, Father Eloi Arsenault and a committee including Willard Mokler, Leroy Doucette, Reg Gaudet and Clovis Doucette, brought into existence a truly dignified option to the funeral services being offered. Their goal was to provide Funerals and related services to everyone at a reasonable cost. Our funeral co-op received its Charter and began operation in 1986.

For six years, facilities were rented from Palmer Road Parish. In 1992, a modern, fully- serviced building was built to accommodate the flourishing business.

Today, West Prince Funeral Co-op continues to grow and has more than 600 members. 
 

Donations

Memorial donations are accepted at the West Prince Funeral Home for any charity requested by the family. The family receives a card identifying the donor.

Donations via e-transfer are accepted through the email, wpfh@bellaliant.com. 


Official receipts for income tax purposes are issued to the donor by the organization receiving the donation.



Membership

When a person becomes a member of a co-operative, he or she has the same rights as every other member regardless of the number of shares held. Each member has the right to be notified of meetings of the membership, to attend meetings and vote on all matters brought before such meetings.

Each member of the co-operative is also entitled to receive a copy of the audited financial statements each year. The members also approve of the auditor appointed at each annual meeting. Each member can also stand for election to the Board of Directors if he or she is interested in being more involved with the overall administration of the affairs of the co-operative.

A membership share in West Prince Funeral Co-op Ltd costs $10 and applications can be obtained by contacting the funeral home or any of the directors.

 


Principles of Co-operation

Principle of Co-operation

For better understanding of co-operation and the funeral co-operatives it may be best to explain the seven principles of co-operation. The seven principles outline the responsibilities every co-op has to its members and communities.

  1. Open and Voluntary Membership
    Anyone who will accept the responsibility of membership and who can use the services may join the co-operative.

     
  2. Democratic Participation
    At the local co-op level, each member has one vote, regardless of the amount of shares held. Member-owners control the co-op and have a responsibility to participate in decision making.

     
  3. Limited Interest on Share Capital
    Co-ops are organized to provide services and are not for investment purposes. Generally, no interest is paid on share capital.

     
  4. Surplus Earnings Returned to Members
    Surpluses, after expenses and reserve fund holdbacks, are returned to members in proportion to the use they make of the co-op.

     
  5. Co-operative Education
    Member education is a vital part of co-operatives. Each co-op has an obligation to provide opportunities to help members, elected officials, staff and the general public, in understanding co-operatives and their role.

     
  6. Co-operation Among Co-operatives
    All co-ops should actively co-operate in every practical way at local, national and international levels.

     
  7. Concerns for Community
    Co-operatives accept the fact that they are vital and an important component of the communities in which they exist and must take steps to encourage the health of the community.
