Courtney, Donalda Christine September 21, 2025

Courtney, Donalda Christine “Donnie” (nee MacKay)
September 15, 1936 — September 21, 2025

The family of Donalda Courtney are saddened to announce her passing.
Mom was born in High Bank, PEI, the sixth of seven children.
Her last years were challenging as she dealt with several health issues and the loss of her beloved husband, Evan.

Mom led a long, quietly contented, full and active life.
She was a wonderful wife and Mother. Her family and home were the centre of her universe.

She trained as a registered nurse (PEI Hospital, class of ‘57). Her career was put on hold as she raised her family and travelled with Dad across Newfoundland and Labrador for his RCMP postings. Mom received the RCMP Second Man award in 2013 acknowledging her role in assisting Dad in remote locations. In Labrador the RCMP detachment was in their home. When Dad was out on a call, sometimes days at a time, Mom was left to man the office and radio. While at the same time looking after her young family.

Once her children were old enough to be on their own after school, she completed refresher and upgrading classes at Memorial University. She then returned to work in nursing positions ranging from nursing homes to VON and Public Health in both St. John’s and PEI.

After retirement Mom and Dad made High Bank their home. If you’ve driven the shore road you may have seen them walking hand in hand. They enjoyed 30 plus years on the MacKay homestead. A spot which Mom was fiercely proud of.
Mom loved gardening, camping, walking, berry picking, badminton, bowling, basket making, playing cards, knitting, sewing, mending, rug hooking, painting, reading and genealogy. Mom and Dad always enjoyed the community school classes where they made new friends and gained new skills at the same time.

Mom treasured her lifelong friendships with her nursing classmates who gathered every summer. She fondly remembers her childhood friends and neighbours, and the coffee girls on Tupper St. who shared laughter and support.

Lovingly remembered by her 4 children and their spouses:
Lynn Manning (Chris), Carolyn Courtney (Paul Seviour), Ruth Courtney-Beck (John Beck), Bill Courtney (Josie).
She loved cuddling babies, and got to do lots of cuddling as she was Nanny to 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Paul (Sarah): Their children Ira & Evie Fanning;
Christine (Jon): Their children George, Teddy, Sage & Lily Howatt;
Ian (Mary-Claire): Their son Wally Manning.

Allyson (Aaron): Their children Callum & Russell Robbins;
Sean (Melanie): Their children Sloan & Jamie Seviour;
Stephen (Heather)
Emma Seviour.

Katie (Jeff): Their children Clark & Vivian Bowser;
Emily (Spencer): Their children Isla, Ellie & Howie Norton;
Jenny (Josh): Their children Caleb & Zoe Slysz.

Jillian & David Courtney.

Also survived by Sisters-in-law Lynn MacKay, and Beatrice and Gail Courtney and her many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her parents, William and Christine MacKay; parents-in-law George and Gladys Courtney; Siblings Sterling (Maureen), Leona (Oliver Giddings), Jessie (Robert Dennison), Catherine (Basil Irving), Angus (Maisie), Wayne, and Brother-in-law David Courtney (Paddy).

Our sincere appreciation to Dr Holland, and the caring staff of : Montague Home Care, Gillis Lodge (where mom lived for the past year), QEH Emerg and Unit 1.
A special thank you to Debbie Walker, Mom’s personal caregiver, friend and niece.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Wellspring Church, Alliston. Reception/visitation immediately following at the same location. Family burial Sunday, October 5, 2025, at Little Sands Cemetery.
Donations in her memory can be made to charity of your choice.

Ward, Michael C. August 1, 2025

Michael C. Ward
May 28, 1955 - August 1, 2025

With great sorrow we (Janna and Sean) say ‘so long’ to my dearest husband and loving father.

Born in Brampton, ON, he was the son of Sarah Anna “Bernice” Ward (deceased) and a big brother to sister Brenda Eagle (Wayne), and predeceased by brother Hugh and sister Darlene. He loved and was loved by his many cousins, but held his Uncle, Bruce Wanless, closest to his heart.

Michael began his adult education at Humber College and continued to pursue his thirst for knowledge over the years. By 1991, he completed (CGEP) in Gaspé (with a 4.0 GPA) DEC in Computer Science and moved on to Acadia University in the fall of 1992 to pursue his BBA. I met him one year later and we were married on graduation weekend in 1996 in Manning Chapel on the University grounds. Our lives led us to Yellowknife, NT where he worked for NorthwesTel for over 17 years.

Retirement in 2021 found us residing in Murray River, PE in a beautiful house, a peaceful community, good neighbours, and a view of the river. It was here that he finally had the room to build his woodworking shop and spent many happy hours making wood toys and fixing things for me.

“I’m going down to the shop for a while, dear.”

There are different reasons for planning ahead. It lets you make arrangements according to your own wishes. If funeral services are paid for in advance they are guaranteed at today's prices. History

The Southern King's & Queen's Funeral Home is a co-operative venture of the people of the communities of Southern King's & Queen's areas. It is owned by the Southern King's & Queen's Funeral Co-operative which was incorporated in 1994. We became the seventh funeral co-op on PEI. Presently we have membership of approximately 270.

A nine member board oversees the working and operation of the funeral home. We held our first annual meeting in April 1995. We began by using local churches for wakes and funerals. In 1996 we purchased 1.9 acres of land in Murray River on which a house was located. The house was renovated so we could hold wakes and small funerals on site. In 2002 we expanded our facility by building on to the present building thus providing extra space and a chapel.

The Southern King's & Queen's Funeral Home offers full funeral services at its newly renovated and spacious facility featuring a chapel, wake room, family / reception area, and ample parking. There is live-streamig of funerals. We are located on Highway # 4 just north of the village limits of Murray River.

Donations

Memorial donations are accepted at the Southern King's & Queen's Funeral Home for any charity requested by the family. The family receives a card identifying the donor.
Official receipts for income tax purposes are issued to the donor by the organization receiving the donation.

We do accept donations by mail to the funeral home (9120 Commercial Road, Rte. #4, Murray River, PE C0A 1W0) or by etransfer to funerals@eastlink.ca (be sure to include your mailing address in the note section so a receipt  can be issued).

Membership

When a person becomes a member of a co-operative, he or she has the same rights as every other member regardless of the number of shares held. Each member has the right to be notified of meetings of the membership, to attend meetings and vote on all matters brought before such meetings.

Each member of the co-operative is also entitled to receive a copy of the audited financial statements each year. The members also approve of the auditor appointed at each annual meeting. Each member can also stand for election to the Board of Directors if he or she is interested in being more involved with the overall administration of the affairs of the co-operative.

A membership share in Southern King's and Queen's Funeral Co-op Ltd costs $50 and applications can be obtained by contacting the funeral home or any of the directors.

Principles of Co-operation

For better understanding of co-operation and the funeral co-operatives it may be best to explain the seven principles of co-operation. The seven principles outline the responsibilities every co-op has to its members and communities.

  1. Open and Voluntary Membership
    Anyone who will accept the responsibility of membership and who can use the services may join the co-operative.

  2. Democratic Participation
    At the local co-op level, each member has one vote, regardless of the amount of shares held. Member-owners control the co-op and have a responsibility to participate in decision making.

  3. Limited Interest on Share Capital
    Co-ops are organized to provide services and are not for investment purposes. Generally, no interest is paid on share capital.

  4. Surplus Earnings Returned to Members
    Surpluses, after expenses and reserve fund holdbacks, are returned to members in proportion to the use they make of the co-op.

  5. Co-operative Education
    Member education is a vital part of co-operatives. Each co-op has an obligation to provide opportunities to help members, elected officials, staff and the general public, in understanding co-operatives and their role.

  6. Co-operation Among Co-operatives
    All co-ops should actively co-operate in every practical way at local, national and international levels.

  7. Concerns for Community
    Co-operatives accept the fact that they are vital and an important component of the communities in which they exist and must take steps to encourage the health of the community.
