Fiorita, Mario "Marty" John June 5, 2025

The death occurred peacefully with family by his side, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Charlottetown, on Thursday, June 5, 2025, of Mario "Marty" John Fiorita, beloved husband of Iris Fiorita (nee Kurylyk), of Kingston, aged 72.

Marty was the loving father of Melissa (Lance) Allen, William (Katie) Fiorita, and Stefanie (Matthew) Silver; and cherished Nono to Ben, Celeste, Elias, Ethan, Lukas, Owen, Annalise, Maya, Josie, Seth, Madelyn, Max, Makayla, and Quentin.

He is also survived by his siblings, Philip Fiorita, Rosa Ferguson, Anthony (Brenda) Fiorita, and Frank Fiorita; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lowell Kurylyk, Susan Kurylyk, and Ian (Elvira) Kurylyk; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Marty was predeceased by his parents, William and Angelina Fiorita; and sister-in-law, Vikki Kurylyk.

Marty was born in Celico, Italy. He and his family immigrated to Canada when he was one year old. He grew up in Toronto, Ontario, and later moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where he studied refrigeration mechanics at NAIT. He met Iris in Edmonton and they married in 1982. After the birth of all three of their children, they relocated to Ontario and then finally settled on Prince Edward Island. On the Island, he established his own successful refrigeration business. He served his customers faithfully and was loved and appreciated. In his retirement years, he and his wife enjoyed travelling, especially going home to Italy, where he was able to see the town where he was born and meet several family members. Another pastime he enjoyed was spending time with his family; he took great joy in his 14 grandchildren. Marty enjoyed joking with all and teasing those grandkids relentlessly; he fixed a few “little red wagons”.  Later in life, Marty entered into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour. His family takes comfort knowing that they will see him again in Heaven.

Louise was an only child, but grew up surrounded by aunts, uncles, and cousins both on P E I and from Boston.

She had an artistic gift, creating beautiful things with her hands. As a young girl, she was always working at her sewing machine, making her own clothes and filling her cedar chest with embroidered pillowcases, bureau scarves and crocheted doilies. These items would later decorate her home. She married Eugene in 1950 and together their raised a loving and devoted family. Louise continued to sew and knit for her family and often took her work to craft markets. Her friendly manner and beautiful work made her table a busy place. She enjoyed the atmosphere and decided to open a craft shop in her own home. For many years, customers came through her door and left pleased to own one of her colourful homemade quilts. Her most memorable working experience was the time she spent at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, making costumes for the nationally-acclaimed theatre.

Louise loved music (especially numbers including the fiddle), a house full of family (whom she could fill with sweets), playing crib and her morning toast and tea by the fireplace.

van Waarden, Johanna "Joke" April 22, 2025

We remember Joke (Johanna van Waarden) for her many gifts, her creativity, strong personality and the legacy that she leaves. A loving partner, mother, and grandmother, she was intelligent, funny, passionately caring and above all original.

Joke was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on 14 December 1953. At the age of
4 she moved to Suriname with her family, and then to Long Island, New York in 1969. Joke completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. There in the Halifax art scene she made many life-long friends and future collaborators.

With friends she visited Prince Edward Island, and there in Rustico, she met William Hamon. They married in the fall of 1976 and moved onto a property in New Glasgow. Max was born in 1980 & Robert in 1983. Between the kids, her husband, the vegetable and flower gardens, and the chickens, Joke enjoyed a growing network of like-minded folks on the Island. Her parents visited every summer to enjoy their grand kids, and they eventually moved to Bedford to be closer. Holidays were regularly spent with extended family and friends. As her parents aged, her father began to develop early signs of dementia and Joke coordinated care for her father. In 1994, the family moved to Banff for new employment opportunities and mountain adventures.

A new era began in Ban]. Joke began to pay more attention to her artwork. Her
appreciation for the company of other female artists led her to develop her art with them and jointly exhibit. Always fascinated by the natural beauty of the west and the adventure of travel and hiking, these themes inspired her work during these years and later in life. As her sons grew up and moved out, Joke was able to devote more and more time to her art. In 2003 she moved back to Prince Edward Island where she sought to establish her
commitment to art on a regular basis. Joke experimented with many themes and subjects, from children’s fairy tales to body-building and sacred landscapes. The family, with much help from friends, built an art studio on the back acreage of the property which provided Joke with the space, and quiet, that her art required.

Her family grew. Her sons found partners. Anna and Engie both developed close
relationships with Joke, joining her in walking, gardening and other family matters. She also became involved with working in local libraries, particularly at the Hunter River branch. With the arrival of her grandchildren, Joke happily devoted many hours to spend drawing and playing with first Emma, then David, Felix and finally Oscar.

Unfortunately, this period was cut short by the onset of dementia. She continued to create new art works and contributed to group exhibits. Although she recognized the early signs of dementia, and complained bitterly how unfair it was, photographs of her and grandchildren show her at her happiest during this time.

Working to keep her at their home in New Glasgow, Bill took on an increasingly large role in looking after Joke. During these years her constant and long walks kept her going. Eventually Joke joined the residents in long term care at Garden Home where the staff took great care of her. Her multifaceted journey finished on 22 April 2025 in the company of family and friends.

Resting at Central Queen's Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, 24 April 2025 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held in New Glasgow Cemetery on Friday, 25 April 2025, at 11:00 a.m. A celebration of life will be held in the summer. Joke loved flowers and they will be gratefully accepted. If so desired, memorial donations made to Alzheimer's Society of PEI or the Humane Society of PEI would be appreciated.

Doyle, Mike April 3, 2025

Mike Doyle, of Kingston, PEI died peacefully on April 3, 2025 at the Provincial Palliative Care Centre in Charlottetown with his loving family around him. He will be dearly missed by his daughters, Ramona Doyle (Kent Thompson), Louise Doyle (Joel Waddell), his stepson, Andrew Stevenson and his grandchildren, Arlo Thompson, Hazel Thompson, and Alex Stevenson; his loving partner Joyce Ling and her daughters Erin Gillespie and Allison Giggey and their families; his siblings Elaine DeBlois (Rob DeBlois), Kelly Doyle, John Doyle (Peggy Reddin), Kenny Doyle (Mary Jane Ready), Erik Brown (Gemma MacKey); and his nieces and nephews Elizabeth DeBlois, Bill DeBlois, Miranda Gerberding, Natasha Gerberding, Ting VonBezold, Chris Doyle, Matt Doyle, Erika Brown, Kyle Brown, Logan Doyle, and Siobhan Doyle.

Predeceased by his parents, Tom and Dottie Doyle of Doyle’s Cove North Rustico, by his sister, Cathy Doyle (Rex Gerberding) and his loving wife of many years, Sue Dobson.

Mike grew up in Doyle’s Cove, having adventures on the farm with his siblings, cousins and loving aunts and uncles. He learned to fi sh with the Court Brothers down at the harbour and how to dance at the hall in the village.
Mike raised his family in the rolling hills of Kingston, PEI with his wife Sue. He drove a school bus for over 40 years for Eliot River Elementary School. He watched kids on the bus grow and start families of their own and then drove their kids to school too.

The drive from Kingston to North Rustico was autopilot for the whole family. Mike knew the art of stopping by. He never missed a visit to his parents while they were with us. After they passed he kept the tradition alive with his siblings. The Cove was a part of his whole life and his presence will always be felt there.

Mike was an entrepreneur with one idea leading into another. From Starvision Satellite TV, the Abegweit Driving School, to the Shipwreck Map and the North Rustico Water Taxi in the harbour, he was never out of ideas. What started as a few t-shirts to promote the water taxi, Mike & Sue turned into the Seagull’s Nest Gift Shop, still running today. After serving as a cook in the Navy he started The BBQ Hut that grew into a restaurant called The Blue Mussel Cafe which he ran as a busy family business for 18 years. When he sold the business, he was really proud of the new owners. The Seagull’s Nest was hit hard by Fiona in 2022, but with help of Dwight Parkman he brought it back and now has been
open for over 40 years. The Seagull’s Nest, the Court Brothers and North Rustico Harbour were a part of his whole life, with that signature shade of yellow being like a family colour.

Mike has had many adventures. He loved life and always had a story to tell. He had connections to people all over the island and beyond.

Join us at a reception to celebrate the life of Mike Doyle, Thursday, April 17 from 4-7pm at the Central Queens Funeral Home, 2538 New Glasgow Rd, New Glasgow, PEI.

History

The Central Queen's Funeral Home is a co-operative venture of the people of the communities surrounding New Glasgow P.E.I.. It is owned by the Central Queen's Funeral Co-op Limited which was organized in 1988. Presently we have a membership of approximately 900.

A nine member board oversees the working and operation of the funeral home. The Central Queen's Funeral Co-op purchased an older home in New Glasgow shortly after it's inception and operated out of the building until 2003 using local churches for most wakes and funerals.

In 2002 the membership approved plans for construction of a modern new facility amid the rolling hills of New Glasgow. We moved into our new building during the summer of 2003. The Central Queen's Funeral Home offers full funeral services in a very attractive and functional building on a beautiful site with generous room for parking. Although most wakes and funerals are held in our building, we still provide services in local churches.

Donations

Memorial donations are accepted at the Central Queen's Funeral Home for any charity requested by the family. The family receives a card identifying the donor.

Official receipts for income tax purposes are issued to the donor by the organization receiving the donation.

Membership

When a person becomes a member of a co-operative, he or she has the same rights as every other member regardless of the number of shares held. Each member has the right to be notified of meetings of the membership, to attend meetings and vote on all matters brought before such meetings.

Each member of the co-operative is also entitled to receive a copy of the audited financial statements each year. The members also approve of the auditor appointed at each annual meeting. Each member can also stand for election to the Board of Directors if he or she is interested in being more involved with the overall administration of the affairs of the co-operative.

A membership share in Central Queen's Funeral Co-op Ltd costs $50 and
applications can be obtained by contacting the funeral home or any of the directors.

Principles of Co-operation

For better understanding of co-operation and the funeral co-operatives it may be best to explain the seven principles of co-operation. The seven principles outline the responsibilities every co-op has to its members and communities.

  1. Open and Voluntary Membership
Anyone who will accept the responsibility of membership and who can use the services may join the co-operative.

  2. Democratic Participation
At the local co-op level, each member has one vote, regardless of the amount of shares held. Member-owners control the co-op and have a responsibility to participate in decision making.

  3. Limited Interest on Share Capital
Co-ops are organized to provide services and are not for investment purposes. Generally, no interest is paid on share capital.

  4. Surplus Earnings Returned to Members
Surpluses, after expenses and reserve fund holdbacks, are returned to members in proportion to the use they make of the co-op.

  5. Co-operative Education
Member education is a vital part of co-operatives. Each co-op has an obligation to provide opportunities to help members, elected officials, staff and the general public, in understanding co-operatives and their role.

  6. Co-operation Among Co-operatives
All co-ops should actively co-operate in every practical way at local, national and international levels.

  7. Concerns for Community
Co-operatives accept the fact that they are vital and an important component of the communities in which they exist and must take steps to encourage the health of the community.
