Nantes, John Thomas Desmond "Des" April 29, 2024

Peacefully at the QEH, on April 29th with his family by his side, and into the hands of the Lord, John Thomas Desmond Nantes of Cornwall, and formerly of Hunter River, passed away at the age of 77 years.

Des was the beloved husband of 53 years of Carolyn (Gallant) Nantes. Cherished father of Judi, Robbie (Nicole Hollands), Michelle (John) Boutilier, and Charlotte (Aaron) MacKenzie. Loving Grampie to Claire and Maria Gosbee, Aidan and Logan Hoogerbrugge, and Skye and Munroe Boutilier.

Brother of Leslie (Joanne) and Kenny (Marie) and brother-in-law to Sandra Nantes, Bill Robertson, Richard (Audrey) Gallant, Mary Alice MacDonald, Frank (Theresa) Gallant, Shirley (Gerry) Gallant, Jerry (Alice) Gallant, John (Patti) Gallant, Denis Gallant, and Ernie (Faye) Gallant.

Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Mary (Trainor) Nantes, Parents-in-law Leo and Irene (Peters) Gallant. Brother Jimmy, brother-in-law Tony Gallant, Greg McCourt, and sisters-in-law Leona Robertson and Ida McCourt.

Des was an accomplished and respected school teacher and administrator for 35 years and he loved his students and coworkers but the real fun started in retirement - he operated a hobby farm, restored tractors and did handyman jobs for people in the community. He was a dedicated community volunteer, as a member of the Hunter River Lions Club for 50 years and a member of the Village Council for 30 years. He was selfless in helping those in need, and wasn’t one to say no when he was called upon. He had a life long strong Catholic Faith that did not waiver in good times or bad. He made time to travel and camp with his family. He will be remembered for his sharp wit and sharp memory, his quirky ways, and his passion for the people and things he loved. His legacy will live on in the stories, memories and laughs we hope all will continue to share for years.

It is with much love and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Michael Thomas Rioux on Monday March 11, 2024, aged 67 years. Born on April 18, 1956 in Campbellton, NB, the family moved to Summerside, PEI in 1968.

Survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Susan (Schurman) Rioux and proudest joy, son Joshuwa (Josh) Michael Rioux, Edmonton, AB, grand fur pups, Kyra, Leana,Thour and chosen niece Cassie. Also survived by his siblings David (Mary) Rioux, Debra Rioux, Margo (David) Gallant, his special Uncle Frank & Aunt Audrey Shearer, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his father Thomas Rioux, mother Ethel (Shearer) Rioux, Special brother's Kerry, Kevin his special Down Syndrome brother he cared for always, numerous Aunts and Uncles whom Mike loved very much and Brother-In-Law Bill Schurman.

He will be lovingly remembered by his In-laws, Layton and Marsha Schurman, special Uncle Peter and Aunt Joan Schurman, special Aunt Marie Bourgeois, Sister-in-law Gloria Schurman, Brother-In-law David (Debbie) Schurman, Steven (Shawn Somers) Schurman, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, his extended “Corr” family of Sherwood Park, AB, his chosen daughter Melanie (Darren) Smith; his Edmonton Police family; Summerside Police family; Summerside Generation XX family; his Rustico Fishing family; as well as numerous life-time loyal friends.

Mike was a one of a kind, caring and larger than life character, salt of the earth loyal friend, devoted Husband and Father. Mike was most proud of his family; his high school sweetheart Susan and son Josh meant everything to him. Mike always loved Josh's friends hanging out at home. He voiced so many proud moments, however a highlight was competing as the first Father and Son team at the 2005 Atlantic Classic Bodybuilding Competition. He was most proud of Josh for his nature to always help others growing up and of late Josh's accomplishments as K-9 and Service Dog Trainer. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Mike. In younger years he was always up for a “good party” “loud music” “more people the merrier” and he was a blast to be around; however after vaccine reactions, mobility issues arose, he then could only enjoy more quiet times at home with a glass of wine in hand.

Mike's Police journey began with the RCMP Auxiliary in 1976 where he fell in love with the job and his peers. He graduated in 1979 from the Atlantic Police Academy and was immediately hired by Edmonton Police Services and served until 1992. His fellow officers described him as “absolutely the most positive officer they ever worked with, he treated everyone, his peers & clients as he liked to be treated, he was impeccable in his physique & dress, his workmanship was second to none, had more patience dealing with people and had the most passion within the dept. for pre-ventive policing, especially with the youth.” Mike served various roles, his favourites were the Riot Troop, developing & supervising project “OWE” as he set EPS records for most warrants collected. He was known to his peers as “The Clawman” servicing the department for years with PEI lobster & oysters in the back of his “Old Blue” Dodge.

Upon moving back home, Mike worked with Summerside Police Services until his work injury forced early retirement in 2017. During these years Mike went back to schooling and was one course away from receiving his Counselling diploma. Mike was most proud when he passed his courses in Ottawa to become a “Crisis” Hostage negotiator. Mike was known for his compassion to help the youth. Challenged on a call, he met teenager Melanie Hughes, which she challenged him on “Where are we to go” so after several months of meetings, a youth board was formed, many volunteers were gathered whom all worked so hard from fruition to the official opening in August 1997 of Generation XX Youth Centre and indoor Skateboarding Park in Summerside. Featured numerously on CBC, CTV, Canadian Living, Saltscapes, Maritimer of the Week often, ATV & YTV Awards, World Pan-Commonwealth Youth Service Award, Premier's Crime Prevention Award, Mike also received the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal, Charlie Ryan Award, Police Exemplary Medal, Long-time Service Award to name a few! Mike spent thousands of his own volunteer hours and always shared credit to the youth and volunteers involved, for without their dedication it could not of been the success it still is today. Mike was loved amongst his peers and was known as the “Oak Tree.” His home was always the gathering place hosting the “newbies” and party's for all his years of service. Mike will always be remembered and loved for his famous “Story telling”, and his continued passion to help all people.

Mike learned a strong passion for “Fishing” at an early age with his grandfather. Wherever he lived, wherever he visited, whoever he hung with, he went fishing. The famous fishing trips and stories in Kelvin Groove PEI, Alberta and BC over the years will never be forgotten. Mike always had a desire to “Go to the WOODS” which brought him to our last home and last love in life, the Rustico Warf and Shanty's. Over these past wonderful years Mike became known as “Rustico's Best Deep Sea Volunteer”. Mike did very well on “Tips” but always handed every penny over to the Captain and crew! He was so proud of his 54 times out in just one season, his goal was to get to 60. Mike was so happy to go Lobster, Halibut, Tuna fishing whenever he could. He tried hard to catch the most bait, Always. You would often see Mike doing his “Blessing on the Boat” at the beginning of the trips for top catches, weight, size and full traps! He loved all the fishermen he met, fished with and enjoyed the cold drafts and hearing all the old fishing stories at the Lions Club. He was fortunate to feel like “part of the fishing family” with so many over the years, especially when he was given “official” Fishing boots from the “Jason D!” He bonded with so many like they were his own blood, he couldn't go enough to the Warf. He most loved to drop into Gallants for his ice cream and tease Keith that he was “goin fishin.” Next a stop into Doiron's Fisheries for a “raw” bag of scallops or salmon, before getting on a boat. Mike loved to visit, have a cold beer on as many days as he could at the Buote Shanty, tell stories, enjoying so many laughs, while also swinging by and teasing others at their booths! Mike especially cherished over the years the “family bond” relationships with “Beauty and the Beast,” friends and crew!

Mike is resting at Central Queens Funeral Home, 2538 Glasgow Road, New Glasgow, where a service of “Remembrance” will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at 2 pm. Following the service a procession will take Mike for a ride to his favourite place, the Rustico Warf. Interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers as an expression of sympathy, Memorial donations can be made directly at the funeral home office (902-964-2886) to the North Rustico Lions “Seeing Eye Dog Program”
or “Saving Grace Animal Society” Edmonton AB (403-785-7427) or online www.savinggracecanada.com would be most appreciated by Mike.

History

The Central Queen's Funeral Home is a co-operative venture of the people of the communities surrounding New Glasgow P.E.I.. It is owned by the Central Queen's Funeral Co-op Limited which was organized in 1988. Presently we have a membership of approximately 900.

A nine member board oversees the working and operation of the funeral home. The Central Queen's Funeral Co-op purchased an older home in New Glasgow shortly after it's inception and operated out of the building until 2003 using local churches for most wakes and funerals.

In 2002 the membership approved plans for construction of a modern new facility amid the rolling hills of New Glasgow. We moved into our new building during the summer of 2003. The Central Queen's Funeral Home offers full funeral services in a very attractive and functional building on a beautiful site with generous room for parking. Although most wakes and funerals are held in our building, we still provide services in local churches.

Donations

Memorial donations are accepted at the Central Queen's Funeral Home for any charity requested by the family. The family receives a card identifying the donor.

Official receipts for income tax purposes are issued to the donor by the organization receiving the donation.

Membership

When a person becomes a member of a co-operative, he or she has the same rights as every other member regardless of the number of shares held. Each member has the right to be notified of meetings of the membership, to attend meetings and vote on all matters brought before such meetings.

Each member of the co-operative is also entitled to receive a copy of the audited financial statements each year. The members also approve of the auditor appointed at each annual meeting. Each member can also stand for election to the Board of Directors if he or she is interested in being more involved with the overall administration of the affairs of the co-operative.

A membership share in Central Queen's Funeral Co-op Ltd costs $50 and
applications can be obtained by contacting the funeral home or any of the directors.

Principles of Co-operation

For better understanding of co-operation and the funeral co-operatives it may be best to explain the seven principles of co-operation. The seven principles outline the responsibilities every co-op has to its members and communities.

  1. Open and Voluntary Membership
Anyone who will accept the responsibility of membership and who can use the services may join the co-operative.

  2. Democratic Participation
At the local co-op level, each member has one vote, regardless of the amount of shares held. Member-owners control the co-op and have a responsibility to participate in decision making.

  3. Limited Interest on Share Capital
Co-ops are organized to provide services and are not for investment purposes. Generally, no interest is paid on share capital.

  4. Surplus Earnings Returned to Members
Surpluses, after expenses and reserve fund holdbacks, are returned to members in proportion to the use they make of the co-op.

  5. Co-operative Education
Member education is a vital part of co-operatives. Each co-op has an obligation to provide opportunities to help members, elected officials, staff and the general public, in understanding co-operatives and their role.

  6. Co-operation Among Co-operatives
All co-ops should actively co-operate in every practical way at local, national and international levels.

  7. Concerns for Community
Co-operatives accept the fact that they are vital and an important component of the communities in which they exist and must take steps to encourage the health of the community.
