Dorothy (Dirgje) DeVries (née Branderhorst)
October 10, 1930 - October 27, 2025
Suddenly, but in His timing, the Lord called home Dorothy DeVries, aged 95, of Charlottetown, PEI on October 27, 2025. She is now fully satisfied in Christ and face to face with her Saviour. She was born on October 10, 1930 in Diesen, North Brabant in the Netherlands, the daughter of Gerrit and Anneke Branderhorst (née Garstman).
Dorothy was a woman of true tenacity and strength. She immigrated with her 11 siblings to the United States and then Canada as a young woman, married the love of her life Ekke DeVries in 1959 and then had 7 children in 8 years, a fact she would often lead with in introductory conversations.
She lost her husband when he was only 39, and faced an uncertain future with what she always carried with her, her faith in the Lord and dogged hard work. That tenacity was with her to the end, even when she broke her hip in her nineties and re-learned how to walk.
Dorothy spent most of her life widowed, but that did not stop her from providing for her family, traveling, writing frequent letters and calling family & friends to keep in touch. Her greatest treasure on this earth was her family; 97 people made up of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren including two on the way.
Dorothy saw the humour in life and was quick to laugh. She had bright blue eyes that shined, especially when telling her favourite stories. She was a thrifty saver, often blunt in words, but generous in actions of love. One of her favourite ways to care for others was in feeding people, and she deeply enjoyed her years of volunteering in LTC.
As she aged, and much of what she loved to do faded away, she continued to walk with the Lord and spend time in His word.
She leaves behind her loving children Fenno (Dianne) DeVries, Gerrie DeVries, Margaret (Doug) Thomson, Anita (Gordon) MacQuarrie, Wilma (Scott) MacLeod, John (Kelly) DeVries, and Elizabeth (Kent) MacDonald. She was the much loved Oma of Matthew and Angela DeVries (Aubrey), Travis and Jana DeVries (Maeryn, Brinn, Evan), Nichole and Josh Maclean (Nathan, Lauren, Kate), Laura and Jared Fraser (McKinley, Hudson, Lachlan, Bennet, Josh DeVries, Tyler and Erienne DeVries (Ikke), Stacey DeVries, Justin DeVries, Sarah and Kevin Van Hartingsveldt (Jakob, Aiden, Asher), Rebecca and Mojtaba Zamani (Ali, Zara), Anne Jan (Lucas, Levi, Adeline), Miriam and Ben Taylor (Everett), Esther and Dave Witteveen (Evelyna), Robert and Samantha Thomson (Laura, William), Eric and Brooke Thomson (Maeveleigh), Lasha MacQuarrie, Jenny MacQuarrie and Austin Henczel, Paul and Lauren MacQuarrie, John and Raquel MacQuarrie (Maren), Leah and James Ens, Rachel and Tim Burton (Albert, Sadie), Kara and Micheal Leger (Wesley, Wren), Jesse DeVries, Mackenzie DeVries, Renee DeVries, Jeffrey and Emma MacDonald (Charley, Joanna, Elias), Bethany MacDonald and Josh Laver, and Stephanie MacDonald.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Ekke DeVries (1972); daughter-in-law, Brenda DeVries (2017); brother-in-law, John DeVries; and most of her large family that she loved, but is survived by her sister Ann Koning, her sisters-in-law Peta Branderhorst, Truis Rozema and Ina DeVries; and her brother-in-law, Lawrence Kodde, as well as many nieces and nephews that she loved and enjoyed.
